Hug a bear. It's good for you.

The population of cute and cuddly Provincetown bears emerged from hibernation earlier this year just in time for Pride in June and the Provincetown Bear Week which concluded this past weekend.

In addition to the usual lineup of pool parties, drag shows, and other lively events, this year’s Bear Week honored its founder, historian John Burrows, who passed away in May of this year. In his absence, the Provincetown Business Guild (PBG), the Crown & Anchor, and other Ptown venues have promised to keep his furry bear dream alive.

“The bear community lost a great champion with the passing of John Burrows earlier this year,” Stephan Hengst, PBG’s executive director said in a statement provided to Out Traveler.

Provincetown Bear Week 2023 took place July 8 to 15 at multiple venues. Events included the Camp Pool Party and Bear Market, the Otter Pop Pool Party, and the Firemen’s Ball.

The highlight of the week was the Provincetown debut of activist and drag artist Eureka O’Hara (RuPaul's Drag Race, HBO's We're Here), who performed a special one-night-only show Saturday evening at Town Hall and appeared at Bear Week Bingo on Sunday.

“Eureka's dedication to inspiring all members of our community and her focus on size-positivity, inclusivity, kindness, and gender diversity are a perfect fit for Provincetown and Bear Week, which has a history of inclusivity of all facets of bear cultures,” said PBG Associate Director Trevor Pittinger.
